The new A-5 tunnel will open to traffic on 23 December following its connection to the M-30

The A-5 underground road project is entering its final phase. Madrid City Council has announced that the new tunnel, connecting Padre Piquer Avenue with Avenida de Portugal, will open to traffic on 23 December 2026, ahead of the originally scheduled completion date.

After more than two years of construction, the opening of this infrastructure will allow traffic along this section of the Extremadura motorway to run entirely underground, as part of the wider Paseo Verde del Suroeste urban redevelopment project.

A full road closure ahead of the opening

Before the tunnel can open, one of the final stages of the project must be completed: connecting the new tunnel to the M-30 ring road. To carry out this work, the existing entrance and exit ramps will have to be demolished, requiring a full closure of the A-5 in both directions while construction is underway.

Madrid City Council has not yet confirmed the dates of the closure, but it is preparing a traffic management plan to minimise disruption and establish alternative routes. One of the measures under consideration is diverting part of the traffic onto the M-40 ring road.

Reinforcement of public transport services

To facilitate journeys during this period, Madrid City Council is working in coordination with the Regional Transport Consortium (CRTM), EMT and other organisations responsible for transport and mobility. The planned measures include additional urban and interurban bus services, as well as increased Metro services. Renfe will also be asked to increase the frequency of Cercanías commuter trains on Line C-5, which connects several municipalities in the southwest of the Madrid region with the capital.

These measures aim to provide alternatives to private vehicles during traffic restrictions and help maintain mobility along one of Madrid’s main access routes. From Avenida de América Transport Hub, we encourage passengers to check for possible public transport service changes and plan their journeys in advance, particularly during periods of roadworks and traffic disruptions.
