Metro de Madrid completes the modernisation of Avenida de América with new lifts and a major accessible concourse
Avenida de América station is now fully accessible following the completion of the extensive modernisation works promoted by the Regional Government of Madrid. The project involved an investment of €38 million and has enabled the installation of ten new lifts, as well as the creation of a new concourse that significantly improves connections between lines and enhances the passenger experience.
This interchange is one of the strategic hubs of Madrid’s public transport network, connecting four Metro lines and serving close to 190,000 passengers every day.
A more accessible and efficient station
The project has completely transformed mobility within the station, making travel considerably easier, particularly for people with reduced mobility. The works included the construction of a new concourse with access from María de Molina Street, connected to Lines 4 and 6, as well as a new passageway linking Lines 7 and 9.
Alongside these accessibility improvements, waterproofing, drainage and sanitation works were also carried out, and existing materials were replaced with more durable and efficient alternatives.
With this project, Metro de Madrid continues to advance its commitment to a more modern, comfortable and accessible network. The Madrid Metro system currently has 579 lifts across the network, making it one of the most accessible metro systems in Europe.
Further improvements across the Metro network
The refurbishment of Avenida de América forms part of a broader plan to improve accessibility at stations throughout the network. Works are currently underway at stations including Ventas, Santiago Bernabéu, Duque de Pastrana, Campamento, Carabanchel, Tetuán, Puente de Vallecas, Ciudad Lineal and Canillejas.
In addition, Metro continues to install new escalators and upgrade infrastructure at various locations across the city to further enhance the passenger experience.
Tribute to Óscar del Moral
The new concourse will be named after Óscar del Moral, former president of CERMI Madrid, who passed away in 2025. Through this recognition, the Regional Government of Madrid honours his work in promoting accessibility and his commitment to improving public transport for everyone.
